Turbo Flyer — TAIT Design Co.
Turbocharged nostalgia in a balsa wood plane.
-
Brand: TAIT Design Co.
Role: Product Designer, Founder, Creative Director
Designed by Matthew Tait, 2013The Turbo Flyer was born from a simple idea: reimagine the classic balsa wood airplane with better materials, sharper design, and a fresh brand story. As the designer and creative director, I led product design, branding, packaging, art direction, marketing, and social strategy, ensuring every detail felt intentional and timeless.
Each Turbo Flyer was screen-printed and laser-cut from premium balsa wood, packaged in a durable, reusable storage case, and designed to be as much a collector’s piece as a functional toy.
To introduce it to the world, I led:
✈ The product launch, building demand from the ground up
✈ A full-scale brand and marketing campaign
✈ Social media strategy and content creation
✈ Retail partnerships and distributionThe results:
✈ Named Best Product Design of 2013 by AIGA
✈ Hundreds of thousands of units sold worldwide
✈ Carried by over 250 high-end design stores
✈ Featured by major retailers like Restoration HardwareTurbo Flyer became more than just a product—it connected generations through design, craftsmanship, and the simple joy of flight.
